In former issues of Politics the problem has been posed: Why did the
working class fail in its historical task? Why did it not offer resistance
to national socialism in Germany? Why is there no trace of any revolutionary
movement among the workers of America? What has happened to the social
vitality of the world working class? Why do the masses all over the globe
no longer seem capable of initiating anything new aimed at their own self-liberation?
Some light may be thrown upon this problem by the following considerations.

A tremendous amount of attention has focused on Greece lately. Looking at the successful anarchist movement there, we can nurture utopian visions to strengthen our resolve; but if we only consider apparent success stories, we will not be prepared for the challenges ahead.
The entire Balkan peninsula is a sort of laboratory of crisis. Studying it, we can discern some of the possible futures that may await us now that North America seems to be entering an era of crisis as well. The vibrant anarchist movement in Greece represents one possible future, in which a powerful social movement establishes hubs of resistance. At a time when the political sands have shifted massively to the right nearly everywhere, when the right is riding high while the left languishes in debris, it is increasingly common to hear the cry “Neither left nor right!” Few right-wingers issue this cry — but then, why should they? Their political label is the toast of several continents today. The fact is that the strongest political winds are blowing many leftists, like the rest of the society, toward conservatism and a glorification of the market.

At this time, many people are at least generally aware that environmentally harmful human activities have caused a number of serious ecological problems, amounting to a kind of crisis. The phenomenon of global warming is probably the best known example, although there is also some awareness around issues like deforestation and the dangers of nuclear energy.

In the person of Hermann Gorter, the revolutionary proletariat
has just lost one of its most faithful friends and one of its most notable
comrades in arms. He figured among the greatest experts in Marxist theory and
was one of the very few who, through conflicts and splits, remained invariably
