The way in which the dead are remembered is a political act – the commemoration of war is never neutral. Australia has commenced an orgy of official remembrance; the ANZAC commemoration industry is expected to consume the larger part of a billion dollars of public and private money over the next two years [1]. The reformist left is already bemoaning the crass commercialism of it all, and the more critical among them point out that ANZAC and Gallipoli were mere side shows to the “countless white crosses” that in “mute witness stand” in the muddy fields of Belgium and France [2]. So technique killed ethics. Because in front of any issue, human beings do not ask themselves what is most right, but what works. They no longer asks themselves this because at this point, in our world dominated in all its aspects by technique, it is given for granted that what is right is what works. Ideas become instruments to evaluate not for their meaning but for their way of being used, for their functionality, for their efficiency. THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN to replace the current system of domestic rates with a new flat-rate Poll Tax is bad news for working class people throughout Britain.
The Community Charge, or poll tax, will start to take over from the rates system in 1989 in Scotland, and in 1990 in England and Wales, and the poor will immediately feel the effect of the changes.
Under the current system, a ‘rate’ is levied on every building in a local authority’s area, based on the value of the property. People living in a four bedroom house on the outskirts of town pay a bigger rates bill than someone living in an inner city flat or bedsit.

In 1920 throughout Poltava province a general insurrection began against the Reds with the formation of 200 units. In the north of Gadiach county there were units led by Alexander Koval, Krupsky, Dmitrenko and Buhovetsky. In Kremenchug county units led by Kikot, Ovdienko, and Prikhodko were set up and in Kobelyatsky county one led by Levchenko. In Zenkov county operated the units of Maxim Mandyk, Pylyp Masyuta, Stepenko, Latoha, Antonenko, Timoshenko, Turchin, Tyutyunnik and others. In a fishing hut, Jeanna, wife of a fisherman, sits by the fire and repairs an old
sail. Outside, the wind whistles and howls, and waves rumble are splash and
break against the shore. The yard is dark and cold, the sea is storming, but it
is warm and cozy in the fishing hut. Earthen floor is swept cleanly; the fire is
still on in the stove; clean dishes glitter on the shelf. On the bed with lowered
white canopy, five children sleep with the sounds of the howls of stormy sea.
The husband, a fisher, since the morning went out on a boat trip in the sea
